Edgartown is located on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, accessible only by plane or boat. Whether you’re visiting for the day, the week or the summer, here are some helpful travel tips on arriving to, and getting around Edgartown.

By boat

The Steamship Authority is the only year round ferry service to Martha’s Vineyard from Woods Hole on Cape Cod. It’s also the only option if you’re looking to bring your car to the Island with you, and advance reservations are required. The Steamship boats arrive in either Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs (depending on the time of year) and both ports are accessible to the Vineyard Transit Authority bus line which offers service to Edgartown. Local taxis are also readily available to transport you from the ferry terminal to your Edgartown destination (and Lyft and Uber are also available).

The Patriot Party Boat is another year round option, offering service between Falmouth Harbor and Oak Bluffs Harbor as well as 24-hour water taxi service if you need late night or early morning transportation.

The Falmouth-Edgartown Ferry, The Pied Piper, is a great option for direct service from Falmouth to Edgartown Harbor.  This ferry runs daily from Memorial Day weekend thru Labor Day weekend, and offers passengers comfortable service aboard their 72-foot luxury fast ferry.

Additional seasonal ferry services to Martha’s Vineyard includes the Island Queen (Falmouth-Oak Bluffs), Hyline Cruises (Falmouth-Oak Bluffs), The Seastreak (from New Jersey, New York City, and New Bedford to Oak Bluffs).

If you are traveling to Edgartown on a private boat, reservations for moorings and private docks are available through the Edgartown Harbormaster, as well as the Edgartown Yacht Club, and the Harborside Inn.

If flying is your preferred method, check out Cape Air which offers year-round flights from Boston and New York, and additional seasonal service from New Bedford, Hyannis and Nantucket, MA and Providence, RI. The Martha’s Vineyard Airport code is MVY and the airport is located in the middle of the island, at 71 Airport Road, West Tisbury. Taxi and car service pick ups are available from the airport, as well as bus service from the Vineyard Transit Authority.  The airport also offers on-site car rentals trough Avis, Budget, and Hertz.

Many other major airlines, including JetBlue, Delta and American Airlines offer seasonal flights to and from the Vineyard and many major east coast cities, including Boston, NY, Philadelphia and D.C.

Tradewind Aviation and Jannus Air Charters offer shared and private charter flights to and from the Vineyard year round.

I left Martha’s Vineyard with short term goals to bring my parents there next summer and long term goals of owning a home there for my kids… it’s that special.
